The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is a volunteer Catholic lay organization comprised of men and women who provide comfort and assistance to those in need. The St. Thomas the Apostle Conference began in 1935 and is the only Conference serving the Ann Arbor area.

For over 72 years, the St. Thomas Society of St. Vincent de Paul has been helping people in the community with a variety of needs. Men and women of all ages are invited to join the Society, both for their own spiritual growth and to reach out with a helping hand to other people, our brothers and sisters in Christ.

Some volunteers provide aid to people who visit our Parish office, helping with needs for grocery vouchers, clothing vouchers, bus tokens, prescriptions, and State ID cards.

Other volunteers work in our thrift store at 1001 Broadway, the oldest still-operating commercial building in Ann Arbor. Serving Christ is the prime purpose of the store, and it has assisted those in need since 1968.  Through a staff and volunteers we work to collect, evaluate and display a variety of donated clothing and household goods.  The merchandise provides a low-cost shopping alternative for quality goods for individuals and families in need. We provide free goods to persons with referrals from our office and many other agencies in Ann Arbor. Any surplus funds generated by the store operations are used to offset the expenses of our other forms of assistance.

There are many other ways that you can serve, including a few special capabilities that would be helpful:

  • Camera skills, to take pictures of jewelry and clothing for our website
  • Carpentry or electrical skills, as needed
  • Ability to convert our paper records to computer files
  • Computer skills and Ebay experience, to sell of help price unusual items
  • You have a pickup truck, which you could drive for occasional service
  • Skill in Spanish, to facilitate putting information in print for customers
  • Skill in creative attractive signs

If you are interested in joining this parish ministry please contact us.
